Ancient Mediterranean Studies, B.A.

The Department offers a B.A. in Classical Studies, with four distinct concentrations in Classical Language and Literature, Classical Civilization, Classical Archaeology, and Ancient Mediterranean Civilizations. All four concentrations offer a broad liberal arts experience that provides an excellent foundation for a variety of careers including law, business, government, journalism, and teaching.

The Classical Language and Literature concentration is designed to ensure a solid preparation in the chosen language and to acquaint students with those works that form the origin of European literature, history, and philosophy. This concentration prepares students for graduate work in the Classical languages and literature and for secondary school language teaching.

The Classical Civilization concentration provides a solid and wide-ranging background for understanding the origin and development of our Western ideas, values, languages, institutions, attitudes, and art. The Classical Civilization concentration is an excellent major for Prelaw students, who should choose courses on Roman civilization (e.g.AMS 101), Roman law (AMS 350), and Latin to fulfill major requirements. It is also an excellent second major for those interested in any area of primary or secondary school teaching those who want the flexibility to curate their own topical, thematic, or cultural focus.

The Classical Archaeology concentration explores the material culture of the Mediterranean with a focus on the Greeks and Romans, but with classes also engaging with the archaeology of Egypt, the Near East and Mesopotamia. Students wishing to pursue graduate work in Classical Archaeology should select this track as it provides a solid foundation in the art and archaeology of the ancient world and includes Greek or Latin language classes which are required for entrance into a graduate level archaeology program.

The fully online Ancient Mediterranean Civilizations concentration prepares students for exciting job opportunities by creating a strong foundation in the humanities and cultivating a life-long intellectual curiosity and its related skills: oral and written communication, critical thinking and information literacy.

The Classical Studies, B.A., Ancient Mediterranean Civilizations concentration is available only in an online format.

Overall Requirements

120 credit hours, to include at least 36 credits at or above the 300 course level.
Minimum 33 credits distributed as follows in one of the four possible concentrations. Students must have at least a 2.0 GPA for courses in the major, and a minimum of 9 credits at the 300 level or above.
